"Shadow" analysis

This song is about a girl who grew up feeling overshadowed by her older sister's success.  She felt lost and abandoned by her family.  She has since accepted the way things are and she now accepts herself.  She does not have a grudge against her sister or her parents and her life has turned out well.  It contains two metaphors that emphasize the overall message of the song.  The first metaphor appears in the first two lines of the chorus, “Living in the shadow/of someone else's dream.”  The shadow is a metaphor for the speaker's feelings of inferiority during her youth.  The second metaphor is also found in the chorus, “My chains are finally free.”  The chains symbolize how trapped she felt and that she is now free.
